Just a few drops of citrus essential oil blends in your diffuser and you’ll feel energized, refreshed, and uplifted. Citrus scents are commonly used in many personal care and cleaning products, but they are also popular in aromatherapy.
I always have my citrus essential oils ready for whenever I need a burst of energy in the morning or an instant pick-me-up in the middle of the day. If you like citrus scents like me, you can enjoy feelings of brightness, freshness, and vitality anytime at home with citrus essential oil blends.
In this article, let’s talk about the various citrus essential oils and when to use them best. I am also happy to share with you my favorite citrus diffuser blends that are quick and easy to make. Shall we get started?
What Are Citrus Essential Oils?
The vibrant scent of natural citrus always reminds me of happy things like bright summer mornings, the feeling of the sun’s warmth on my skin, or enjoying a cool glass of delicious lemonade. I’ve always loved their vibrant scents, so when I got into aromatherapy, I knew that citrus oils would make a wonderful addition to my collection.
Citrus essential oils are extracted from the peels of citrus fruits through cold pressing and steam distillation. These oils capture the fragrant and therapeutic properties of citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, and tangerines.
These refreshing oils are linked to many health and therapeutic benefits. According to the National Library of Medicine, their scent alone imparts calming, relaxing, mood-uplifting, and cheer-enhancing effects. Health-wise, Aromatics International says that citrus oils support the immune system, improve skin health, and promote healthy digestion, among others.
Here are the most common citrus essential oils, which we will use to make our diffuser blends later. Stock up on these so you can create your own recipes!
Lemon
Lemon is one of the most popular fruits in the citrus family, that’s why we’re all familiar with the fresh, zesty, and lightly sweet scent of lemon essential oil. Not only is it a popular scent in many household products, but it is considered to be one of the most versatile cleaning oils – it’s an excellent disinfectant, a natural bleach, and an amazing degreaser. Lemon oil is also energizing and can promote mental clarity.
We use lemons a lot in our home, from tackling discoloration in stainless steel pans and removing pee stains from a carpet to making our favorite Café Romano Espresso. If you need to feel energized or uplift your spirits, lemon oil is the perfect bright note to help you with that.
Lime
Lime is like the fraternal twin of lemon. It just has a sharper, more sour citrus aroma, but it offers basically the same therapeutic benefits as lemon. The two even have the same cleaning qualities!
Lime is an amazing disinfectant and air purifier. If you’re feeling down and fatigued or need to focus, diffuse lime essential oil, and you’ll be up and about in no time.
Grapefruit
Much like lemon and lime, grapefruit essential oil is a great go-to on days when you’re lacking focus or feeling lethargic. Keep a bottle at your workstation or by your bed for an instant pick-me-up whenever you need it.
Grapefruit oil has a refreshing tangy, citrusy aroma. Kaitlyn Berkheiser points out the essential oil is believed to help promote weight loss, treat acne, and relieve anxiety.
Sweet Orange
With its sweet, bright, and sugary citrus aroma, I personally think that sweet orange oil has the gentlest scent out of all citrus essential oils. No wonder why its sweet aroma is found in a lot of bathroom and linen sprays.
I wasn’t surprised when I learned that sweet orange has a calming effect that helps lift your mood and ease stress, anxiety, and tension. It’s also great for relieving upset stomachs and helping treat acne. On days that you need a breather, use your sweet orange essential oil and enjoy its calming and mood-boosting effects.
Tangerine
Tangerine essential oil is very similar to sweet orange. It also has a bright citrus smell, just slightly less sugary. My kids love this scent and my youngest even said that it makes her room smell like a candy shop! Since tangerine offers the same purposes as sweet orange, it’s also a great choice for when you need to lift your spirits during moments of overwhelm.
Mandarin
Another citrus essential oil with a gentle and fruity scent is mandarin—it has the perfect balance between sweet and sour. Best known for its calming effects, mandarin essential oil is also often used in skincare products because it is believed to do wonders for the skin, including treating acne, diminishing stretch marks, and lightening scars. Mandarin is the way to go if you need to brighten a dull day.
Bergamot
Bergamot is one of the lesser known citrus fruits. It has a distinctive citrus scent with a slightly floral undertone. Just like any citrus essential oil, bergamot oil is an effective mood booster. Bergamot essential oil is also said to help lower cholesterol, ease symptoms of food poisoning, and reduce feelings of anxiety and fatigue.
